Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.

The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.

The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
