Christantus Uche Sparks Dominant Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS ought to be enough to seal straight passage to the knockout stages, especially following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Dominance Established from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
