The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
